The challenge
Energize Denver sets building performance targets that the City and County of Denver must meet in its own facilities. With a large and varied portfolio, the city needed to know where investment would make the biggest difference.
The approach
Following a competitive selection in 2024, ASHRAE Level 2 energy audits were carried out across 70 municipal buildings. Rather than treating the audits as a compliance exercise, the findings were translated directly into capital plans tied to the city's long-term emissions targets.
- High-efficiency lighting upgrades
- Weatherization
- Retro-commissioning to get more from existing systems
- Utility rebates and incentives applied to reduce cost
Work spans fire stations, police buildings, shelters and county offices, scheduled so facilities stay open throughout.
The outcome
More than $5 million in targeted improvements now underway, and a repeatable model for public owners facing building performance mandates.
